The UK's first teaching law firm has been recognised for 'outstanding' community work across Nottinghamshire

A teaching law firm in Nottingham has been recognised for its ‘outstanding’ community work, providing free legal advice across Nottinghamshire.

Nottingham Law School’s legal advice centre, which is part of Nottingham Trent University, was given the 2020 award for its contribution to the community by Nottinghamshire Law Society.

In the past academic year, it dealt with 248 cases; recovered £4m in benefits and compensation for its clients; and 350 students undertook legal work experience at the centre.

Judges praised the centre for the “high standards of skill, professionalism and dedication” shown.

The advice centre was the UK’s first law firm fully integrated into a law school when granted an alternative business structure (ABS) licence in 2015 and went onto win ABS of the Year in this year’s Modern Law Awards 2020.

Students work at the not-for-profit advice centre under the supervision of qualified solicitors, advising clients across a range of legal issues either through voluntary work or through modules within the curriculum.

Since obtained its ABS licence, the firm has expanded into new services and practice areas, increasing access to justice for the local community, including charities and small businesses.

Much of its work moved online because of the pandemic.

Nottingham Law School’s executive dean, Jenny Chapman, said the award was "thoroughly deserved".

She commented: “The Legal Advice Centre is a law firm with a difference.

“The team are committed to providing access to justice to the local community whilst training, and inspiring, the legal professionals of the future.”
